Established in 1982, the festival is set to celebrate its 43rd edition from the 4th to the 8th of March 2025.

With a rich and storied history, the TUJA (Tudengijazz) festival has always stood out as a remarkable celebration of student jazz musicians across Europe. What sets this festival apart is its unwavering commitment to showcasing the freshest, most original compositions, bold arrangements, and pure musical talent of young performers. It’s more than just a series of concerts — it’s a platform where rising stars come together, not only to share their music but also to foster international collaborations and forge new, lasting connections.

TUJA’s roots run deep in Estonian culture, tracing back to a time when jazz was more than just music—it was a quiet rebellion. Born during the restrictive Soviet era, when jazz was officially banned, the festival was a testament to the perseverance of passionate music students. Nearly 40 years ago, these determined individuals brought their dream of a jazz festival to life, creating a “mini-festival” that provided hope and direction in challenging times. Today, TUJA continues that legacy, inspiring new generations and carrying forward its mission with pride.

Over the decades, TUJA has become a launchpad for some of the most respected names in contemporary jazz. The festival’s stage has been graced by the likes of Jaak Sooäär, Tanel Ruben, Oleg Pissarenko, Villu Veski, Kadri Voorand, Raul Sööt, Raivo Tafenau, Virgo Sillamaa, Siim Aimla, Sofia Rubina, Joel Remmel, Laura Põldvere, and many more. From established virtuosos to emerging ensembles like The Crosslegs, SEPT, and the Linda Kanter Quartet, TUJA has played host to a dynamic array of talent. Behind the scenes, the festival has consistently been led by accomplished figures in the Estonian jazz world, including luminaries like Anne Erm, Villu Veski, and Reigo Ahven, whose vision and passion have helped shape TUJA’s enduring success. The significance of TUJA was once again recognized in 2020 when the festival was awarded the prestigious Jazz Promoter of the Year title as part of the Estonian Jazz Awards.

Since 2011, Jazz Estonia has officially taken the reins as the festival’s organizer, furthering its mission to elevate Estonian jazz both locally and globally. Founded in 2004, Jazz Estonia doesn’t just put on concerts; it creates an entire ecosystem around the jazz community. From promoting Estonian artists internationally to organizing collaborative projects, thematic events, and securing vital funding, Jazz Estonia has become an influential voice in the European jazz scene. As a member of the European Jazz Network since 2006, its efforts extend far beyond Estonia’s borders, connecting musicians and audiences around the world.

As it continues to thrive, TUJA remains devoted to its original mission: nurturing the next generation of musicians, cultivating top-tier jazz performances, and strengthening international ties in the ever-evolving world of jazz. What began as a small, rebellious dream has grown into a cultural institution, bridging past and present while shaping the future of Estonian jazz.

This spring, from 4th to 8th of March, six ensembles made up of young musicians will perform at the Tudengijazz festival in Tartu, Pärnu, and Tallinn.
